Library Happenings – Summer Reading Program offers options for all ages

By Angie Georgeff

Our Summer Reading Program for adults is underway! It is similar to the program we offered last year, but with a twist or two. Library patrons 18 years of age or older may participate; teens younger than 18 have their own program.  Each book, eBook, audiobook, DVD or Blu-ray Disc you “read” will earn you an entry in the prize drawing.

There will be “extra-credit” activities you can pick up at the library for additional entries.  Simply fill out a very brief “book review” form for each item you’ve completed.  Since formal registration is not required, please be sure to include your name and phone number or email address on each review form submitted. We can’t give you a prize if we don’t know who you are or can’t get in touch with you!

Beach Reads!

Even if a seaside stay is not in the cards for you this year, you can vicariously enjoy the caress of an onshore breeze and dig your toes deep into damp sand with one of our “beach reads.”  Nancy Thayer will take you to Nantucket to spend the season with Courtney Hendricks at “The Island House” of the Vickery family.

For the last decade, Courtney has spent her summers on the idyllic island with her college roommate’s family. Now she has established a career in Kansas City as a college English professor.  Will one last summer on Nantucket fulfill her youthful dreams of romance or take her home to stay?

Dorothea Benton Frank’s “All Summer Long” will escort you from the history of Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina to the privacy of Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands to the beauty of Nantucket and on to the sophisticated strands of southern Spain. As they plan to relocate from New York to Sullivan’s Island, interior designer Olivia and her husband Nicholas travel the world with her eccentric clients and ponder the change of lifestyle such a move will entail.

Friday Family Fun Day

With a name like Whizzpop, he has to be fun!  Professor Whizzpop will open our season of Friday Family Fun Days with his “Going for Gold Magic Show” this Friday, June 10.  Kids of all ages are invited to bring their parents and grandparents to Erwin’s Town Hall at 4 p.m. for a show that will make reading even more enchanting than it already is.

The kids who attend our Summer Reading Programs always look forward to Mr. Bond!  Mr. Bond and the Science Guys will bring their “Spectacular Science Show” to Erwin’s Town Hall at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 17.  Science is simply more fun when you get to participate in experiments. Mark your calendar now for our Family Fun Day event every Friday afternoon through July 15.  You won’t want to miss them!
