Library Happenings – Staff thankful (Nov. 18, 2015 issue)

Thanksgiving is next week and stores are filled with festive decorations and tantalizing gifts. That alone is sufficient to put our staff at the library into a jolly holiday spirit, but we have more than that to make us smile. The federal funds that are made available to libraries each year under the Library Services and Technology Act have recently been released. Since they can only be used for specific library materials, this is the time of year when we order the bulk of our DVDs, audiobooks, large-print books and materials for kids and teens.
Much like little children, we watch for UPS trucks to stop and for men or women in brown to haul in boxes from our various vendors. Depending on the size of the order, two or three of us sit down at a table and check off titles as they are pulled from the boxes. The items are then routed either to Kristy or me for cataloging and finally to Kristy for processing. Although it is a lot of work, we love it. The only thing we like more is compiling the orders!
And that is where you can help us. If there are titles, authors or subjects that you would like to see in our collection, please let us know. Each time I start to compile an order, I go to the wish list we keep at the circulation desk and check it first. With state and federal funds, we are not allowed to place backorders, but if an item is available from our approved vendors, we will try to get it for you.
Board Meeting
The Board of Trustees of the Unicoi County Public Library will meet in the library lobby at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19. The public is welcome to attend. If you require special accommodations, please call the library at 743-6533 for assistance.
Open House
November traditionally is a time to look back at the waning year and count our blessings. This year, in particular, we here at the library have a lot to tally. We have new carpet, fresh paint, and a host of other upgrades, and we are grateful to everyone who helped make this transformation possible.
So, you are cordially invited to an open house at the library on Monday, Nov. 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. We will be serving light refreshments and showing off our new look. That is Thanksgiving week. It’s the perfect time for us to express our appreciation to the organizations and individuals who made the renovation possible and to thank our community for your support. We hope everyone will come to check out our improvements and see what we have to offer you!
