Library Happenings – Registration underway for Summer Reading Programs

By Angie Georgeff

With school out and Memorial Day peeking over the horizon, your library is gearing up for our Summer Reading Programs. Registration for our teen and children’s programs is taking place this week. You may come to the library any time during our regular hours and get the forms at the circulation desk.

Our programs will begin on Monday, June 5 and continue through Friday, July 15. You need to register each child only once, but you must register at least a week in advance of the desired program so we have enough room and supplies on hand for every participant.

Weekly classes are divided into five age groups. For the youngest children, Mommy & Me focuses on sensory play and socialization time for kids and parents. Other age groups are determined by the grade the child will be entering when school resumes. The construction theme for 2017 is accompanied by the slogan “Build a Better World.”  Each week will consider a different facet of the theme and illustrate it with a craft or activity.

Because the library does not have enough square footage to accommodate large groups, we hold our weekly Family Fun Days at Erwin’s Town Hall or other locations in the community. That way we can bring entire families together for these special events.  Most will be held on Fridays; the exception will be the first.

Bob “The Animal Guy!” Tarter will bring his “Hand-y Animals” Wildlife Program to Erwin’s Town Hall on Thursday, June 8 at 3 p.m. This presentation will provide an opportunity to see how animals are adapted for construction, since every creature needs a home.

All ages are welcome at Family Fun Days, so bring kids, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends. For these Family Fun Day events, there is no need to pre-register. Simply sign in at the venue on the day of the program. We want everyone to enjoy reading and learning this summer.

Registration is not required for the adult Summer Reading Program. Those who participated last year will be comfortable with the 2017 version. Further details will be available in next week’s column, but all of you avid readers can start compiling your Summer Reading lists and come on down to the library to try out this year’s grand prize rocking chair!

Holiday Closing

The library will be closed on Monday, May 29, in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. No items will be due on that day, but you may return books to our drop boxes at any time. They are located at the library in Erwin and at Town Hall in Unicoi. Please do not deposit DVDs in the boxes, since they may be damaged if a heavy book falls on them. We wish you all a safe and happy Memorial Day!
