Library Happenings – Masterpiece Theatre captures imagination in show (Jan. 14, 2015)

“Downton Abbey” is only the latest in a string of pearls that have made “Masterpiece Theatre” the best television on television for more than forty years. One of the first Masterpiece series to capture my imagination was “Poldark,” which starred Robin Ellis and was based on the Poldark novels of Winston Graham. It aired during the late 1970’s and is the reason I was so delighted to trace some of my English ancestors back to Cornwall. Of course, I hope they were more like dashing Ross and Demelza than shiftless Jud and Prudie Paynter.
We who are still fans of the original series are looking forward to the new Poldark, which is slated to air later this year on Masterpiece. The series will star Aidan Turner in the title role of Captain Ross Poldark, who returns home at the end of the American Revolution. His arrival causes consternation in Cornwall, since his family was convinced he was dead.
During Ross’s prolonged absence, his father has died; his uncle has inherited his property; his fiancée has gotten engaged to his cousin; and his servants–including the aforementioned Jud–have taken over his home. There were no yellow ribbons for poor Ross. He is determined to set things right, but it won’t be easy. His fortunes will ebb and flow about as often as the treacherous Cornish tides.
