Library Happenings – Library readies for Apple Festival (Sept. 30, 2015 issue)

The countdown is underway! There are only two days left until the 38th annual Unicoi County Apple Festival. More than 300 vendors of appealing craft items will crowd the streets of downtown Erwin on Oct. 2 and 3, along with most of your neighbors and about 110,000 visitors.
Since it’s all in celebration of Unicoi County’s delicious apples, you know there will be food, and lots of it. There also will be three stages for entertainment. If you have forgotten how to get to the library through all this hustle and bustle, don’t worry. After skirting the urban revitalization construction for three years, we who work at the library know just about every route to get around downtown.
As usual, we will be open both Friday and Saturday. Although several streets will be blocked by vendors, your library will still be accessible. Just take Elm Avenue south past Love Street and Erwin Utilities to Iona Street. Turn right at Iona and cross over Main Avenue to Nolichucky Avenue. Turn right at Nolichucky. The Unicoi County Public Library will be on your left in our beautiful and historic old depot building.
Park at the Library!
The parking spaces in front of our building will be reserved for patrons who are using the library. There is no charge for parking while you are using library facilities or shopping at our book sale. For those who want to attend the festival, convenient parking will be available in the library parking lot on Friday or Saturday for a donation of $5. All of the funds raised will help support library programs. Our parking lot will open at 8 a.m. each day of Apple Festival. Business hours will be the same as usual: The library will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Book Sale!!
Depending on the often undependable October weather, you may want to cool down, warm up or dry off. If that’s the case, why not take a short break and visit the book sale in our basement? The sale will be open during our normal business hours. Our shelves are overflowing with books and videos, with something for every age and literary taste. Even if you spend just a few minutes browsing these donated and weeded books, you may unearth a hidden gem.
Stay Home?
And if you’re one of those who just can’t face the crowds, be sure to visit us today or tomorrow and borrow one of our great new books, or perhaps some DVDs. Then you can hunker down until Sunday and escape to any time or place that takes your fancy.
