Library Happenings – Favorite reads of 2015 vary (Jan. 13, 2016 issue)

We want to thank all of you who took the time to consider the books you read in 2015 and let us know which one you liked best. I’ve tabulated the votes and come up with: an every-way tie. Many titles and authors were lauded, but none received more than a single vote.
I suppose the moral of the story is that reading preferences are highly personal and that our opinions of books are shaped nearly as much by what we bring to the table as by what the author presents to us. If everybody looked for the same things, we would all like the same book.
For example, my favorite book of 2015 is Alice Hoffman’s “The Marriage of Opposites.” It was inspired by the lives of French Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro and his mother Rachel. Both were born on the Caribbean island of St. Thomas, where the blinding sunlight and searing heat were mitigated by lush tropical foliage and chattering parrots. The novel is set there and in the far more subtle environs of Paris, and these disparate settings permeate and even motivate the composition.
Since I like to immerse myself in the color and texture of different times and places, Hoffman’s evocative details kept me spellbound. I certainly don’t want a plot to get bogged down by descriptions a la “Hunchback of Notre Dame,” but a book that doesn’t draw me into its world and hold me there soon forfeits my attention. You may be looking for something entirely different, and that’s what keeps life interesting. I would get bored working here if we had 500 copies each of fifty different books!
