From Staff Reports

Emmi Linkous, a student at Unicoi County Middle School, has won the sixth grade 4-H Regional public speaking contest.

Emmi won first place in her classroom, advanced on to be the sixth grade county winner and ended up becoming the first place winner in the Upper Eight Regional Public Speaking Contest.

The topic of Emmi’s speech was perseverance and overcoming challenges. Her inspiration came from a story about Mike Day, a Navy Seal who in 2007 was shot 27 times in Iraq and yet managed to walk on his own to the Medevac helicopter.

Emmi  related Day’s story to making a failing grade, not getting picked for a team or being bullied. She wanted to remind those listening to her speech that thankfully they aren’t being shot at but that adversity comes in all forms and that a never quit attitude will always help them face any challenge.

Emmi is the daughter of Eric and Kati Linkous, Erwin.

Emmi is an A honor roll student, member of the UCMS Student Life Committee and plays softball and volleyball for the school.

She has a younger brother, Samuel Linkous.
