UCHS head basketball coach resigns

By Richard Rourk

Unicoi County High School Boys Basketball coach John Good resigned Friday, Feb. 26, effective immediately. Good, who came to UCHS from David Crockett High School in Jonesborough, became coach of the Blue Devils April 8, 2019.

In his two seasons with UCHS, his teams amassed a 33-32 record. The timing of the resignation followed Good’s attendance Wednesday, Feb. 24, at an event supporting East Tennessee State University’s basketball team and coach regarding the right of players to kneel during the national anthem.

Unicoi County Schools Director John English released the following statement to The Erwin Record: “Coach Good informed us Friday afternoon of his decision to resign as the head coach of UCHS basketball effective immediately,” English said.

“We have nothing but respect and appreciation for Coach Good and his dedication and commitment to our basketball program,” English said. “We were proud to have him and his family join our program and community two years ago and wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”

English, who spoke briefly with The Erwin Record on Monday, March 1, was attending a meeting in Asheville and could not name an interim coach at this time.

On Saturday, Unicoi County Athletic Director Michael Smith, a former basketball coach himself for the Blue Devils, guided the team for a season-ending 96-51 loss to Greenville in Regional competition.
