The popular adage defense wins championships is a phrase the Blue Devils are banking on with district tournament time around the bend.
Unicoi County High School (19-4, 7-1) kept their undefeated streak alive at home and moved into a first place tie in the Three Rivers Conference thanks to a 52-39 win over Sullivan South on Saturday, Jan. 18.
UCHS scored a victory at home against Happy Valley, 66-33, on Friday, Jan. 17. The Blue Devils opened up the week with a 67-51 win against Sullivan North on Tuesday, Jan. 14, on the road in Sullivan County.
Saturdays win saw the Blue Devils give the Rebels (6-1) their first loss in the conference and extend their win streak to six games following their loss to Jefferson County on Saturday, Dec. 28.
Connor Simpson paved the way on offense with 15 points and was joined in double-figure scoring by Keith Arrowood and Nic Chambers, who scored 12 points each.
It was a shutdown defensive effort in the second half by the Blue Devils. The score was tied, 23-23, at halftime. South went on a 7-5 run to open the third quarter until Arrowoods drive to the lane at the 4:15 mark netted a bucket and free throw to knot up the game at 30.
UCHS then went on to take the lead, 35-30, at the end of the quarter with buckets from Arrowood and Simpson.
The Blue Devils outscored the Rebels 17-9 in the fourth quarter.
We knew we had to shut them down at halftime, Arrowood said. They were 5-10 in the first half shooting three-pointers.
