Wells sets javelin record

Unicoi County High School graduate CJ Wells captured another accolade during a weekend stint at the University Games held at Science Hill High School.
Wells nabbed a final of 117’-3” in the javelin event, surpassing the school record set by former UCHS standout Kyle Greene who finished at 108’.
“Coach (Allen) Cox at University High was the one who told me,” Wells said in an interview with The Erwin Record on Monday, July 27.
Wells has been staying busy since the conclusion of the school year working out at East Tennessee State University campus, as he gears up for classes beginning next month.
“Yesterday was the first time I ever threw a javelin,” Wells said. “I learned how to throw it maybe 30 minutes before I broke the record.”
The natural talent Wells possesses was on full display during his time with the UCHS track and field program. A standout junior career saw Wells set multiple school records.
A set back due to injury his senior year put a hamper on his last year with the school, but it hasn’t stopped his drive to move forward with his athletic career. He is working to walk on with the ETSU decathlon team.
“I have been working with coach Cox all summer,” Wells said. “Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, every week, working on pole vaulting to learn how to do that in the decathlon.”
