Webb breaks three-point record

A record-setting night by Lady Devil senior Haley Webb and propelled the Unicoi County High School Lady Devil basketball team (2-6, 1-1) to a 68-25 victory over Sullivan North on Friday, Dec. 5, in Kingsport.
Webb finished with a game-high 24 points, with eight shots falling from behind the arc – all in the first half.
Webb’s three-point prowess gave her the state record for most three-pointers made in one half according to the National Federation of High School’s record book. Also, the eight three-pointers in one half is the third most all-time nationally.
The national record for most three-pointers in one game was achieved by Rebecca Greenwell, from Owensboro, Ky., back in 2013 with 17.
Breaking state records isn’t uncommon ground for the Lady Devils. In 2013, UCHS drilled 19 three-pointers in their 80-54 win over West Greene in Thanksgiving tournament action at South Greene. Webb hit four during that contest.

The Lady Warriors capitalized on their defensive momentum on Tuesday, Dec. 2, and survived a late rally by King’s ball club.
“We played great defense in the second quarter,” Happy Valley head coach Larry Abel said. “But, we went flat there late in the third quarter. When we played better on defense, we won the game.”
The Lady Devils made some noise in the first quarter, taking a 17-14 lead, but the Lady Warriors would take over at halftime with their own three-point advantage, 27-24, orchestrated by four steals from Kalee Johnson and a pair of shots by Emily Whitaker.
Happy Valley extended their lead to 43-36 heading into the final period of play when the Lady Devils were able to knot things up 42-42 off a three-point shot from junior guard Hannah Rice.
The Lady Warriors were solid at the charity stripe with under a minute to play – knocking down 7-8 from the free throw line to hold on for the 7-point victory.
“They extended the lead on us,” King said. “We talked about defensive adjustments and I feel like we didn’t do what we needed to do to get the stops. When were in desperation mode, it happened to work out for us, but we couldn’t capitalize.
“It’s one of those situations with two evenly matched teams but one is 5-1 coming in with experience winning those kind of games and we’re 1-5 and not able to do that yet,” King continued.
Four Lady Devils scored in double figures against the Lady Warriors: Webb led the way for 14 points, Rice added 11 (all in the second half), while Hayes and Harness added 10 each.
Hayes recorded her first double-double of the week in the contest, grabbing 16 rebounds.
Brown drilled a three-pointer off the bench. Emily Lynch and Neelee Griffith each contributed a field goal in the loss.
Johnson led the Lady Warriors with 19 points and Jenna Eaton tossed in 15.
