Walk-off home run lifts Lady Devils over Union

One swing of Brooke Strother’s bat gave her team an instant reservation to Murfreesboro.
Strother hit a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Unicoi County High School Lady Devil softball team a 6-5 win during the Class AA Sectional game against Union County on Thursday, May 16, at Lady Devil Diamond.
Unicoi County (35-5) will be heading back to the state tournament for the fifth time in a six-year span.
Union (26-19) knotted up the game at 5-5 to give the Lady Devils an at-bat in the seventh inning.
With two outs and extra innings looming, Strother crushed the ball over the center field fence to send her squad to the Spring Fling this week.
“The pitch was just right there,” Strother said about her game-winning hit. “It was a meat pitch, I was hoping to hit one out.”
It was only fitting that the Lady Devils would see a home run continue their season for an extra week. The team currently holds the overall state record home runs with 57 on the year.
Leading the charge is Tiffany Laughren, who hit her 20th home run of the year during the substate game, which puts the sophomore as the new state record holder for home runs in a season.
Laughren’s home run came in the fifth inning, broke a 4-4 tie and gave the squad a one run advantage.
