The Unicoi County High School girls soccer team made senior night one to remember.
Playing Three Rivers Conference foe Happy Valley in Erwin on Monday, Oct. 3, the Lady Devils earned the first victory in the program’s history with a 2-1 win over the Lady Warriors.
Sophomore Juana Ponce put the Lady Devils on the scoreboard in the first half.
“The first goal occurred by Alex Carter winning the header off of the opposing team’s goal kick,” head coach Bettina Chirica said. “This then allowed Juana to get the ball, take a shot and score.”
The teams played to a 1-1 draw at halftime. The Lady Devils came out of the break ready to get the victory, according to their head coach.
“The team played united for the seniors and because we knew home field advantage was on the line for tournament time,” Chirica said. “During halftime we talked about how this could really be their last home game, and I think that inspired them to push through and play harder.”
Ponce scored her second goal of the match after receiving the ball from the midfield.
The Lady Devils also played well defensively, keeping the Lady Warriors from scoring and tying the match.
“Overall my defense was strong with Fernanda Murillo, Ruth Diaz, Daniela Martinez and our goalie Alexandra Reynoso,” Chirica added.
During halftime, the Lady Devils honored their senior teammates – Daniela Martinez, Dolores Meza, Haley Kossow, Brooke Rose, Fatima Ponce and Alexis Silvers. Photos of the seniors and their families will appear in an upcoming issue of The Erwin Record.
The Lady Devils are scheduled to play at Sullivan South on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 5 p.m. They are also scheduled to travel to University High for the last match of the regular season on Friday, Oct. 7, at 6:30 p.m. They will host Happy Valley in tournament action on Monday, Oct. 10, at 6 p.m.
