UCMS varsity defeats Sevier

In a crowded Middle Eight Conference basketball scene, Unicoi County Middle School Jr. Blue Devil head coach Ken Hilliard saw his varsity squad split conference action last week.
The Jr. Blue Devils (8-6, MEC 5-6) concluded the week winning their opening round of the Trailblazer Invitational middle school tournament at Daniel Boone High School on Saturday, Dec. 12.
They were able to excite the home crowd on Thursday, Dec. 10, with a 55-50 thriller over John Sevier Middle School.
“It was a great game,” Hilliard said. “We were able to break through their pressure. John Sevier is a good team, but we battled all the way through.”
Brock Thompson led the way for the Jr. Blue Devils with 22 points and was followed by Boone Reed’s 16-point performance.
While Thursday netted success for the squad, the UCMS came up on the other end of the spectrum against Greeneville on Tuesday, Dec. 8, in a 30-29 decision.
“I thought we played good defense during the game,” Hilliard said. “We just couldn’t get it together for another shot at the end.”
Thompson and Reed had the hot hand for the team, dropping 12 and eight points, respectively.
The Jr. Blue Devils will wrap up the week participating in the tournament at Daniel Boone.
UCMS will open the new year on Tuesday, Jan. 5, with a road contest at Liberty Bell. The junior varsity will open play at 4:30 p.m. and will be followed up by the varsity at 5:30 p.m.
