UCMS teams split series with Vance

The middle school programs recently wrapped up a two-game week by going up against Vance Middle School on Thursday, Dec. 1.
Coach Kerri King’s varsity squad traveled to Bristol on Thursday afternoon and pulled away with another victory by taking down the Vikings in a nail-biter on the road.
The Lady Devils were led by the team’s leading scorers, Abbey True, who paced the Lady Devils in scoring with 19 points, and Hannah Rice, who also scored in double figures with 10 points.
Deah Seward, Ashlee Padgett and Neelee Hall each accounted for the final amount of scoring for the Lady Devils with six points, four points and two points, respectively.
The Blue Devil varsity played in Erwin with coach Ken Hilliard’s team putting up an impressive defensive effort against Vance, but were unable to battle back from an early deficit.
Dylan Puttman led the scorers for the Devils with 10 points, with Eli Gillis contributing eight points in the effort. Gillis also snagged 10 rebounds.
Coach Hilliards squad accumulated over 20 boards during the night, thanks to Gillis and fellow post player, Ian Miller, who snagged 11 rebounds during the game.
Hilliard was also quick to praise Dalton Spears and Jordan Metcalf for their efforts during the game.
“They played good defense,” he said.
The UCMS teams open this week by taking on Colonial Heights, after The Erwin Record’s press deadline on Monday, Dec. 5
The boys will be on the road on Thursday, Dec. 8, traveling to Ross Robinson. The girls will stay in Erwin to host Ross Robinson’s girls.
The Blue Devils are set to tip-off at 4:30 p.m. with the Lady Devils’ game set to begin at 5 p.m on Thursday.
