The Unicoi County Middle School golf program reached a milestone last week.
“It was a productive day as the boys team picked up their first win in program history and it came against someone we will see at the district tournament,” UCMS head coach Gene Renfro said. “We played well enough to win, but we noticed flaws that will be addressed before the next time out. Once those fixes are in, the sky is the limit for this group.”
Playing at the Erwin Elks Lodge on Thursday, March 12, the Jr. Blue Devils’ team score of 180 bested Ridgeview’s 193.
Hayden Hottinger led the Jr. Blue Devils with a score of 40. Other players contributing to the winning score were Caleb Peterson (46), Cole Shelton (46) and Kameron Bell (48). Also representing UCMS last week were Jacob Peterson (50) and Luke Berry (53).
Representing Ridgeview were Caleb Williams (43), Griffin Moore (48), Zach Brock (49) and Logan Wheatley (53).
The Jr. Lady Devils just missed out on a victory, losing to Ridgeview by only 3 strokes.
“On the girls side Norah Ray stepped up to lead the group Thursday with a career-best round,” Renfro said. “The girls team is showing improvements every time out and it will be fun to watch this group grow.”
Ray shot a 51 and Noell Farnor shot a 53 to combine for a score of 104 for UCMS. Lilly Hopson (54), Marlee Cornett (55) and Laney Rogers (55) also represented the Jr. Lady Devils.
Ridgeview posted a team score of 101 thanks to Zaylee Scheuerman (49) and Allie Johnson (52).
School system officials announced on Monday, March 16, that county schools will be closed until April 13 due to coronavirus concerns. No sports will be played during that time.
