UCMS football team scrimmages Hampton

An early start to the season and head coach Jason Hensley sees potential.
Unicoi County Middle School had their first football scrimmage on Thursday, Aug. 7, in Hampton against the Jr. Bulldogs. Hampton Elementary School pulled away with a 4-1 decision. Three of the Jr. Bulldog’s touchdowns came in the latter part of the scrimmage.
“Up front we had two plays offensively where we didn’t win the line of scrimmage,” Hensley said. “The rest of the time we won upfront. We’ve got a long way to go, but I saw some positives from today.”
The Jr. Blue Devils have 38 players currently on the squad and had their fair share of players step up when needed during last week’s scrimmage.
“Diego (Diaz) played well for us on both sides of the ball,” Hensley said. “Brett (Strother) did a good job for us at quarterback and Tanner Vanhoy had a couple of big plays for us as a backup quarterback.”
A schedule full of practice awaits the team before their home opener on Tuesday, Aug. 19, against Ross Robinson.
The team is still accepting players, Hensley said. Athletes are encouraged to come out to join the squad can sign up before Aug. 21.
