With the season winding down, the Unicoi County High School volleyball (8-12, 4-5) team is battling for position in the Three Rivers Conference. And head coach LeAnn Lane hopes her squad can play its best at the right time.
Last week, the Lady Devils bested Providence (25-4, 25-16, 25-10) in non-conference action in Erwin on Monday, Sept. 10.
Shelby Miller led the team with 7 kills and 2 aces. Chloe Powers had 6 kills, 14 digs and 2 aces. Sarah Grace Larkey had 5 kills, 3 aces, 9 assists and 5 digs. Ashtan Vance had 4 aces and 7 digs. Emma Kelly had 5 kills.
UCHS added a needed win to its conference standings on Tuesday, Sept. 11, when the ladies defeated Chuckey-Doak (25-13, 25-14, 25-13).
Miller and Larkey each contributed 7 kills. Miller also had 4 blocks. Powers had 6 kills. Kelly had 3 kills. Blake Hall had 6 aces, while Vance added 2 aces and 9 digs. Sydney Rogers had 6 digs.
The Lady Devil junior varsity team also defeated Chuckey-Doak (25-12, 25-14). Caitlin Wilson had 5 kills and 8 aces in the win. Alex Withers had 4 kills. Dora Benton, Hannah Shelton and Makenzie Casey had 3 kills each. Natilee Clouse had 4 digs.
The varsity team’s victory over Chuckey-Doak brought the team’s conference record to 4-4 ahead of a matchup at Sullivan South on Thursday, Sept. 13.
“Now it’s a race to land higher than fifth place,” Lane said after the Chuckey-Doak victory.
At South, the Lady Devils lost in three sets (25-10, 25-18 and 25-20).
Remaining conference games for UCHS include matchups with Elizabethon on Sept. 19, Sullivan East on Sept. 25 and Sullivan Central and Sept. 27.

The Lady Devils faced Daniel Boone in non-conference play on Monday, Sept. 17, at KACHEA on Tuesday, Sept. 18, after The Erwin Record’s press deadline for this issue.
Their next scheduled match will be in Erwin against Elizabethton on Wednesday, Sept. 19. They are also scheduled to play at Cherokee on Monday, Sept. 24, and face Sullivan East in Erwin on senior night on Tuesday, Sept. 25. Matches are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
