Regular season meets continue to ready Unicoi County High School track and field athletes for the postseason. Last week, Blue Devils and Lady Devils traveled to Greeneville on Tuesday, April 3, and to Science Hill on Thursday, April 5, for competitions.
“The meet at Greeneville on Tuesday was not only a meet of great successes for UCHS track and field, but it was a great opportunity to see our kids persevere,” head coach Megan Davis told The Erwin Record. “After dealing with delays in the meet and timing issues, our kids just went out and did their jobs and competed. It was a long night for them and they rose to the occasion, taking advantage of a night to get to do what they practice every day for.”
Results for the Blue Devils included: Kody Lewis – first place in the 100-meter and second place in the 200-meter; John Campbell – first place in the 800-meter and fourth place in the 200-meter; Roby Lemmon – first place in the shot put; and Jacob Schreck – fifth place in the 400-meter.
Results for the Lady Devils included: 4×800-meter relay team made up of Valeria Ponce, Kaitlyn Tilson, Jillian Taylor and Megan Todd won first place; M. Todd – first place in the 1600-meter; Taylor – second place in the 400-meter; Tilson – second place in the 800-meter; Sabrina Todd – second place in the 3200-meter; Ponce – third place in the 400-meter; Alexis Harvey – third place in the 800-meter; Hailie Dehoff – fourth place in the 800-meter; Alex Carter – fifth place in the pole vault; and Zoie Stout – fifth place in the 400-meter.

“The varsity meet at SHHS on Thursday was a great meet for our kids,” Davis said. “They got to see and compete against a higher caliber of athletes, which continues to prepare our group for the reclassification put in place this year and our placement in the larger school sectional.”
Results for the Blue Devils included: Lewis – second place in the 100-meter and fourth place in the 200-meter; and Lemmon – second place in the shot put.
Results for the Lady Devils included: 4×800-meter relay team made up of Ponce, Tilson, Taylor and M.Todd won first place; S. Todd – first place in the 3200-meter; Halie Hawkins – third place in the pole vault.
“We are training hard and putting in a lot of work, day in and day out,” Davis said. “Our kids have taken on these days as a challenge and they are seeing their times drop and their heights and distances increase. My assistant coaches and I couldn’t be happier with the progress we are seeing. We are exactly where we need to be at this point in the season. I tell our athletes all the time, ‘we don’t need to peak yet; we’ll get there at the right time.’ I look forward to our upcoming meets and the upcoming successes of our athletes.”
