The 2018 golf season came to an end for the Unicoi County High School golfers at the larger schools District 1 golf tournament held at the Johnson City Country Club on Sept. 10.
Although they did not qualify for the region tournament, head coach Gene Renfro saw his Blue Devil golfers improve on their performances from last season.
“The team score at the district was 20 shots better than last year,” Renfro said. “I am proud of the guys for the improvement from last year and throughout the season. With that though, the course was tougher this year at the Johnson City County Club, but I believe the guys know shots were left out there or the score could have been lower even close enough to have placed ahead of David Crockett.”
Science Hill won the team competition with a score of 293. Other team scores were: Tennessee High – 320; Dobyns-Bennett – 321; Daniel Boone – 337; Sullivan South – 364; Elizabethton – 365; Sullivan East – 366; Sullivan Central – 367; Volunteer – 392; David Crockett – 467.
The Blue Devils posted a team score of 506. According to Renfro, individual scores were: Brett Lingerfelt – 102; Caleb Adkins – 148; Jordan Hensley – 117; and Nicholas Hensley – 139.
“I am proud of how the team came together this year with two players who had not played golf before stepping up to compete in our top three spots with Brett Lingerfelt and Jordan Hensley,” Renfro said. “With Lingerfelt along with Caleb Adkins, Nicholas Hensley, Nicholas Bender, Andy Cole, and Nicholas Lynch and Katlyn Higgins able to return for next season, things should continue to improve on the course.”
