UCHS concludes cross country season

Unicoi County Middle School cross country programs recently wrapped up the 2015 running season with the Middle 8 Conference race held in Kingsport on Thursday, Sept. 24.
Head coach Lydia Hilliard saw Jr. Blue Devil Boone Reed lead the way by medaling with a top 10-performance. Reed finished the event in ninth place at a time of 9:28.
“It was a season best performance for Boone,” Hilliard said. “Not only with a top 10-performance, but he came away just a few seconds of beating the UCMS school record held by Thad Higgins at 9:24 in a 1.5 mile race.”
Darren Soulier also came up with a solid performance for the Jr. Blue Devils by placing in the top 20 at 15th, with a time of 9:41. Rounding out the top five performers for the boys were Jordan Bridges, Caleb Adkins and Matthew Hensley with times of 10:38, 10:46 and 10:58, respectively.

An increased number of runners and great efforts at the end of the year put a stamp on a successful season, Hilliard said.
“It has been a great season,” she added. “I’m very proud of the progress that each runner has made.”
UCMS runners prepared for the XC finale by competing in the annual Raider Run on Thursday, Sept. 17, in Kingsport. Hilliard added she was proud of both teams’ efforts during a crowded race at Sullivan North High School.
