Teams win tournament openers

Morning games and some weekend snow did not deter the hoop stars of Unicoi County Middle School.
The Jr. Blue Devils and Jr. Lady Devils survived the first round of Middle Eight Conference action on Saturday, Jan. 18, at T.A. Dugger Middle School.
The boys opened up the all-day slate of games with a 44-28 victory over Vance Middle School. In the second game, the UCMS ladies survived a late-game push from the host school and survived for a 38-35 win over the Lady Jr. Cyclones.
Trevor Hensley paced UCMS with 15 points and Clay Simpson tacked on 12 points in the paint to help the team move into the second round on Wednesday, Jan. 22, against Greeneville Middle School at 5 p.m.
“We practice early in the morning on the weekends so this didn’t come as a surprise,” head coach Ken Hilliard said about the team’s effort. “It was an important win for us. A win in the first round puts you in the Area Tournament next Saturday at John Sevier. We’ve worked too hard to fall in the first round and I thought our guys really responded.”
