Teams compete in conference jamboree

Fans of the Blue Nation got a sneak peek of the upcoming 2014-2015 hoops season last week.
The Unicoi County High School Blue Devil and Lady Devil basketball teams took the court on Thursday, Nov. 6, to participate in the annual Three Rivers Conference jamboree held at Sullivan East.
Head coach Kerri King and her Lady Devils started the evening with their 20-minute quarter with Unaka.
UCHS scored a 26-19 win against the Lady Rangers in a contest that saw the Lady Devils emerge with a quick lead; however, Unaka chipped away at the lead as the quarter progressed.
Lady Devil junior point guard Hannah Rice tallied double figures with 11 points including a trio of three-pointers.
Senior Chelsey Harness, who returned to the court after recovering from an ACL injury, aided the team on the night with five points and pair of boards.
Seniors Haley Webb and Morgan Lee Brown added a trey each in the contest. Destinie Hayes added a late bucket and Ashlie Padgett added a pair of free throws. Emily Lynch and Halie Padgett also saw key time during the preseason event.
In the following contest, the Blue Devil underclassmen took the court against Unaka and fell in a close affair, 17-11.
Blue Devil freshman Trevor Hensley (five points) and Clay Simpson (four points) led the offensive firepower. Sophomore Dylan Putman tacked on two points.
The final contest for UCHS during the jamboree was a battle between the Blue Devil upperclassmen and Elizabethton varsity team.
Both teams stayed evenly matched with time expiring, but Cyclone Tyler Nichols drained a game-winning three-pointer to give his team the 24-21 victory.
New Blue Devil Merrick Nicksic led the scorers with eight points in his debut at UCHS. Seniors Zach Thelen and Will Shelton combined four nine points. Davis Webb and Chase McNabb added a bucket each.

The night featured two inter-squad scrimmages as the Lady Devils and Blue Devils divided into teams in a battle of teammates.
While high octane basketball action took the billing, high school cheerleaders were recognized, along with the UCMS cheer squad and basketball teams.
