Team reaches championship

The Unicoi County Little League 9-10 year-old all-star baseball squad came within striking distance of achieving a state berth, but fell just shy against Bristol, 14-11, on Monday, July 6, in Johnson City.
Because Monday’s defeat was the first loss for the Unicoi County team, the team played Bristol again for the state tournament bid on Tuesday, July 7, after The Erwin Record’s press deadline.
“Our guys are driven,” said manager Aaron Banner. “They want this championship. Our pitchers were a little off at the end and you can’t be off in a game like this.”
Lucas Slagle carried a bit of offensive momentum to get things rolling after the Blue Devils fell behind 6-0.
In the third inning, Slagle accounted for scoring five runs, including a grand slam, to give the Blue Devils an 11-10 lead.
Bristol used a tough offensive effort at the end of the game, scoring the final four runs to pull away with the come-from-behind-victory.

Manager Chris Bogart and the 11-12 year-old softball all-stars also saw their busy Monday result in a contest on Tuesday.
After rain soaked the weekend affairs with the team, the ladies resumed play on Monday after a 3-0 victory against Carter County.
The Lady Blue Devils fell to Daniel Boone, 6-2, in the semifinals, but ultimately battled their way to the championship by knocking off Carter County once again, 7-0, in the losers’ bracket championship.
If Unicoi County was able to win on Tuesday, they are scheduled to play again on Wednesday, July 8, at Daniel Boone.
