After the dust settled, Unicoi County High School had a new name in the record books.
Gabe Simerly broke the UCHS record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.65 in Erwin during the Blue Devils and Lady Devils track and field meet on Tuesday, April 2. The previous record of 23.94 was previously set in 1999 by Brett Lamie.
This was huge, UCHS head coach Holly Perdue said. We have a couple other kids who are close to breaking school records. I feel like them seeing Gabe break a record will give them the extra encouragement they need. Gabe is a great leader on our team and I couldn't be more proud of him.
Johnson County, Happy Valley, University High and Tri-Cities Christian all participated in the meet. The schools were able to get back into action following postponements from inclement weather during the previous week.
Simerly won the 200-meter while fellow Blue Devil Richie Farmer raced away with a second place finish with a time of 24.47.
Another highlight throughout the meet came from Blue Devil senior Kyle Greene, who cleared a personal best in the pole-vault with 13 feet and was able to record the first place finish over Devon Wade (University High).
Greene and Wade, who are friends away from the track, last met in a meet during the TSSAA track and field state meet.
Greene has already broke the record of 13-2 in practice and it is only a matter of time before it happens in an official meet, according to Perdue.
I am so proud of Kyle, Perdue added. He vaulted really well despite the cold weather and this being the first meet he has gotten to vault in.
