The youngsters in Unicoi County are preparing for the upcoming EJAA season.
For the first sign-up we had 32 football players and 18 cheerleaders register for the upcoming season, EJAA president David Bell said. Our next sign-up is July 14 and after that well get our season underway.
Registration will start at 1 p.m. and last until 5 p.m. on July 14 at Dr. Fernados office in Erwin.
(Dr. Fernandos) been a real help with the league, offering his office for sign-ups and helping with the physicals, Bell said.
The league has been a big help for the youth in the area by allowing kids an opportunity to come out to either cheer or hit the field and gain experience at a young age.
It helps teach them the importance of working together as a team, Bell said of the league. Being able to work together and play football, but most of all being able to enjoy playing.
When it comes to the competition this year, its all up in the air, following last years Pee-Wee team that ended the season undefeated.
We just encourage the kids to do the best that they can and have fun, Bell explained. We all strive for a chance of getting a conference championship, but its about having fun.
The fun will go a long way in the future for the kids, Bell said, with a hope that the kids will continue the love for the sports during the years.
We want to develop a feeder program and instill the lessons into the kids at a young age, he added. Were looking to have a strong showing this year.
The EJAA Jamboree is slated to begin on August 18. The location of the event will be announced in the future. The regular season will begin the following week.
