Every storybook needs an ending.
The Unicoi County Middle School Jr. Blue Devils capped off an exciting season by falling in the quarterfinals of the TMSAA East Tennessee Sectional Division AAA tournament to Robertsville Middle School, 45-36, on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at Sevierville Middle School.
The loss gave the UCMS squad a 22-3 record for the 2013-2014 season.
When it came to Robertsville, the squad brought back memories of the 2007-2008 season when Unicoi County High School fell to Austin-East in TSSAA Class AA substate game, according to UCMS head coach Ken Hilliard.
A few years ago, at the high school level, Austin-East came to Erwin, Hilliard said. And they brought pressure the high school team hadnt seen all year long. We ran into the same type of team in the first round. They presented pressure we have not seen the entire season and were extremely quick and very athletic. Its hard to prep for that type of speed they had in practice.
While Robertsville, a feeder-program for schools in Oak Ridge, brought the pressure all night, the Jr. Blue Devils would not shy away.
UCMS trailed by four at halftime but offensive struggles in the third quarter helped the boys from Oak Ridge pull ahead by double figures.
At halftime, we were still right in it, Hilliard said. We used a press offense, but we had a dozen wide open shots that we missed.
UCMS cut the deficit to four points in the fourth quarter, but Robertsville was able to make their foul shots down the stretch to come away with the victory.
