Runners open new season with meet in Kingsport

A resurgence of running at Unicoi County Middle School continues for cross country head coach Lydia Hilliard.
Jr. Blue Devil and Jr. Lady Blue Devil runners opened the 2015 season with high marks when competing in the RNR All-Comers Meet on Thursday, Aug. 28, at Domtar Park in Kingsport. The runners faced a bevy of competition from middle schools across the region.
UCMS carries 32 runners into this season and saw all but two compete in the event.
The Jr. Blue Devils were led by Darren Soulier, who finished first for his team with a time of 13.24. Boone Reed was nipping on the ankles of his teammate, coming in second with a time of 13:53. Jordan Bridges, Caleb Adkins and Charles Hopson rounded out the top five finishers for UCMS with times of 14:09, 14:10 and 14:44, respectively.
Matthew Hensley took home sixth for his team in a battle with Nicholas Hensley. Matthew had a time of 14:47, just a few seconds ahead of Nicholas at 14:50. Isaac Gillis added a time of 14:45; Isaiah Smith ran 15:25; while Thomas Byrd finished at 15:40.
Rounding out the boys team were Bryce Queen (17:19), Peyton Morrell (18:37), Michael Knop (19:27), Damien Pruitt (22:57), Brycen Callahan (23:47) and Bryan Reid (23:48).

Subrina Todd was the top finisher for the Jr. Lady Blue Devils with a time of 14:16 for Hilliard’s crew in Kingsport. Marissa Soulier finished in second with a time of 14:35, while Cheyenne Wilson was close behind at third with 15:15.
Halie Dehoff finished fourth for the team at 16:28, while Jimena Rodriguez-Avila took fifth place at 17:26 for her team. Brittney Knop (18:18), Valeria Ponce (18:20), Bella Bogart (18:36), Bernice Luquin (19:33) and Lizbeth Fregozo (20:66) rounded out the top 10 finishers for UCMS.
Olivia Rogers (23:12), Leshli Lopez (24:01), Olyvia Mitchell (24:11), Adrianna Richardson (23:52) and Isabella Reynoso (25:28) rounded out the girls race.

UCMS runners will be back in action in Sullivan County to compete in the annual Warrior Invitational on Thursday, Sept. 3, at Warriors Path State Park. The junior varsity and varsity runners will compete in separate races during the event with action starting at 4:15 p.m.
