The Unicoi County High School girls soccer team (2-6, 0-2) won their first two games of the season last week.
“The girls were really excited to have two wins,” head coach Bettina Chirica said. “It lifted their spirits and proved their hard work is paying off. This will impact the girls by giving them confidence in the games ahead.”
The Lady Devils earned their first win of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 5, with a 9-0 victory over Hampton in Erwin. Scoring for UCHS in the game were Jillian Taylor (3), Spencer Garant (1), Andrea Lopez (2), Ruth Diaz (1), Fernanda Murillo (1) and Katherine Altemose (1).
They followed that up with a 5-0 victory over West Greene in Erwin on Thursday, Sept. 7. Taylor scored 4 goals and Lopez scored 1 in this win.
“I think the girls learned that if they put heart into it, they can achieve a lot more than they think,” Chirica said. “They played hard and achieved two wins.”
The Lady Devils are going to continue to work to improve.
“We still need to work on shifting as a unit up when we have the ball and to recover when we lose the ball,” Chirica said. “For the games ahead we are going to continue working hard at practice by maintaining our fitness, and critiquing our touches.”
The Lady Devils were scheduled to host Sullivan Central in conference play on Monday, Sept. 11, after The Erwin Record’s press deadline.
They will face Hampton in conference play on the road on Thursday, Sept. 14, at 6 p.m.
They will host Sullivan South for another conference game on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 6 p.m. in Erwin.
