Being on the whitewater is a way of life for Erwin resident Michael Patterson whose love of kayaking has turned a hobby into a chance to represent the area at a national level. The 31-year-old Patterson secured a bid back in April to join the United States K1 kayak team in the upcoming 2013 ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championship to be held at the Nantahala Gorge in North Carolina during September.
The accomplishment also sent a ripple throughout the kayaking community with Patterson being the fi rst kayaker from the Pyranha Kayaks, a pro-team based out of Asheville, to be part of the world competition. It was a huge deal, Patterson said during a phone interview with The Erwin Record. They host team trials every two years and I had to do that to qualify. They choose the top five to represent the U.S.
