Off the Field – Weather delays games (March 25, 2015 issue)

It wasn’t an exciting week for varsity softball at Unicoi County High School.
Both games scheduled for last week, University High and Elizabethton, were canceled and postponed with the Lady Blue Devils looking to get back into the fray on Tuesday, March 24, on the road at Happy Valley.
For the Blue Devil baseball team, the varsity diamond cutters missed out on their opportunity to play on Friday, March 20, against David Crockett, thanks to rainy weather.
Decisions on the rescheduled games for Elizabethton at Unicoi County (softball) and David Crockett at Unicoi County (baseball) were not announced to The Erwin Record prior to the paper’s print deadline.
The University High/Unicoi County softball game will reportedly not be made up.

Milligan College softball head coach Wes Holly made history last week with a former Lady Blue Devil part of the festivities.
Holly recorded his 800th career win at Milligan when his Lady Buffaloes secured a doubleheader sweep on Hiwassee College on Saturday, March 21.
During his 27-year career with the local college, Holly amassed a record of 800-462, the third best record among active NAIA coaches.
Former UCHS standout Whitley Hensley is an assistant with the program.

Former Blue Devil basketball standout Logan Lyle earned Daktronics All-Southeast Region honors on March 13 after helping the King University men’s basketball team to a 20-plus win season. Lyle also became the active three-point leader in the NCAA during the season.

Reunions are apparently ordinary with former Blue Devils lurking in the collegiate baseball scene.
Walters State, ranked No. 13 in the National Junior College Athletic Association, welcomed New River Community College on Wednesday, March 18, in a 14-0 victory.
The previous week Walter State’s Austin Green and Ethan Rice were able to meet back with their former UCHS teammate Connor Simpson during a three-game series against Roane State. Last week, the duo were able to link up with former Blue Devil Hunter Burnett who started at third base for New River.
