Off the Field – Vance chosen as defensive coordinator (Feb. 11, 2015 issue)

From the gridiron of Gentry Stadium to the deserts of New Mexico, former Blue Devil coach Zane Vance will now anchor New Mexico State University’s defensive efforts next season.
Vance was promoted to the role of defensive coordinator for the NCAA Division I school, according to a report by the Las Cruces Sun-News, last week after serving as an assistant coach with the university the past two seasons.
Vance assisted with the linebackers and special teams before his promotion. He will replace former coordinator Larry Coyer.

King University announced on Feb. 5 that Logan Lyle received the Capitol One Academic all-district tournament honor.
The senior member of the men’s basketball team is the active leader in three-pointers for the NCAA who has also excelled in the classroom, according to the release, with a 3.56 GPA. Lyle also works as a resident assistant at the university’s residence halls.
Lyle leads the Conference Carolinas with over 80 three-pointers this season and currently ranks third in the NCAA Division II.
King University was 18-4 on the season prior to The Erwin Record’s press deadline.

Unicoi County Little League will hold its final registration for the 2015 season on Saturday, Feb 21, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Fees for each group include: T-Ball for $35; Minor League for $40; Major League for $45. Volunteer applications are $5.
The league requires proofs of residency dated between Feb. 1, 2014, and Feb. 1, 2015.
A mandatory coaches’ clinic will be held at Erwin Town Hall from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
UCLL is located at 549 South Main Avenue, near the National Guard Armory.

The collegiate baseball season has the brickdust going in the air and former Blue Devil Scott Gibson is staying busy in Greeneville.
The UCHS graduate started the opening three games of the year for the Tusculum Pioneers.
Gibson previously attended Columbia State Community College, coached by Mike Corn, another Unicoi County native.
