Off the Field – There's No Need to Fret (Aug. 27, 2014 issue)

Don't fret. It was only Week Zero.
The Unicoi County High School football team had the hype and right tools, but couldn't get a victory against a stacked Hampton squad on Friday, Aug. 22, at Gentry Stadium.
Don't look for the coaching staff to give excuses which is a trait you don't commonly find. The players and coaching staff know what happened and it is a learning experience going forward.
This team has the tools and the right guidance. No heads need to be down after the loss.
Last I checked, there is still a season to be played.
It is all about an attitude adjustment for head coach Robert McElwee and his staff. If you set foot at Gentry Stadium on Friday night, you can sense there is a positive and continued change in the atmosphere.
The Blue Devils just played against a loaded team. Plain and simple.
As mentioned before, tools are in place. The fall nights and game experience will be vital moving forward.
The popular phrase, “Rome wasn't built in a day” is overused but it is applicable to the current situation.
The week ahead is full of preparation for a game against longtime non-conference rival David Crockett.
The Pioneers stormed Gentry Stadium last season to score a victory and I believe the Blue Devils have the stuff in the tank to go to Crockett and avenge last season’s loss.
Be ready for a fun three months of football.

To be honest, it is very rare to find a workplace where you can get along with everybody. Luckily, at The Erwin Record that isn't a problem.
The entire staff recently took a staff trip to Pigeon Forge for a mini-vacation of sorts and you couldn't have written a script for a better day.
It has been almost four years since I started as a writer with this paper. A lot of changes have taken place over the years but it is great to see the paper is, and has been, in right hands and will continue that trend in the coming years.
I also found out that if journalism doesn't play out in the future, there could be a chance to hit up the Karaoke circuit singing Def Leppard. But that is another story for another day.
