Off the Field – Schedule updates (Jan. 27, 2016)

My respect goes out to whoever made Mother Nature angry last week – you did a bang-up job.
Tennessee went under a state of emergency as Winter Storm Jonas brought the first big snow of 2016 to the region. The storm made its presence felt by hampering travel conditions, keeping individuals stuck inside their homes and throwing the second half of the basketball season for a loop.
The Unicoi County High School basketball teams were only able to get one game in last week, which was a trip to Happy Valley on Tuesday, Jan. 19. Recaps of the games are featured in this issue of The Erwin Record.
Other contests last week were rescheduled due to the weather. Here is a schedule update:
• The UCHS swim team, represented by Kaleb Clawson, competed in the Northeast Tennessee High School Regional Swim Meet in Kingsport on Monday, Jan. 25. The meet was originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 23.
• Unicoi County Middle School girls’ varsity basketball team opened play in the Area 1 tournament on Monday. The team was set to play in the Middle 8 Conference championship game last week, but it was cancelled due to the inclement weather.
• The UCHS girls’ Sullivan Central game that was set for Thursday, Jan. 21, was also cancelled. A makeup date has not been announced.
• The UCHS boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will make a to trip to Sullivan South on Thursday, Jan. 28. These games were originally scheduled for Friday, Jan. 22.
Readers can view updates of these events online and expect a full report from the games in next week’s issue of The Erwin Record. Things are expected to heat up as the race to postseason intensifies.

After a busy basketball career in the Valley Beautiful and Bristol, Logan Lyle seems to be adjusting well to the Land Down Under.
Lyle, a former UCHS Blue Devil and King University Tornado standout, recently made the trip down to Australia to begin his professional career with the Ringwood Hawks.
The team has highlighted Lyle, along with two other signees, on their Facebook page since they joined the team. The players have been videoed during the first practice with the program and photos have been included of their “coaching debuts,” working with youth club teams the Hawks sponsor prior to the start of their regular season.

UCHS senior softball player Abby Hensley will sign on Thursday, Jan. 28, to play collegiate softball at Walters State Community College.
Hensley, a key cog in last year’s TSSAA sectional-qualifying team, joins a recent line of players from the county to join the Lady Senators, including Ashley Starnes and current WSCC sophomore Brooke Strother.

Following up months of negotiations, the City of Johnson City approved a 10-year lease for the Sevierville-based Boyd Sports, LLC to take over the management contract for the Johnson City Cardinals.
Boyd owns the Tennessee Smokies, the Chicago Cubs minor league affiliate based in Sevier County, and agreed to make approximately $400,000 worth of investments to the Cardinals’ facilities that would include turf, locker room upgrades, ticketing system, concessions renovations and a party deck pavilion.
