Off the Field – Rekindled rivalry (Dec. 3, 2014 issue)

I’m not afraid to say I bleed orange.
The University of Tennessee football team ended the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 29, with a win over in-state rivalry Vanderbilt, 24-17. The victory gave the Big Orange a 6-6 record and qualified the team for a postseason bowl game.
As much as I would love to see the Big Orange score wins over the Commodores, I didn’t mind seeing Vanderbilt control the series the past two years.
The rivalry needed to be rekindled. After the Volunteers controlled the series over the years, Vanderbilt scoring a pair of wins was vital in the continuation of the series.
Let’s be honest. The online banter from fans, crowds yelling for or against the teams and a game actually holding relevancy has made the series a lot more fun.
Both programs are heading the in right direction. With the SEC West controlling the conference title aspirations over the years, seeing this feud getting the greenlight once again makes the college football fan inside of me ready to see what’s in store for next season.

The Unicoi County High School Blue Devil basketball team scored a big win over Sullivan South during the 25th Annual Hardee’s Classic last week.
The Blue Devil coaching staff is experimenting with different lineups and they are seeing a bevy of athletes starting to step up early in the season.
A tip-of-the-cap goes out to the players and coaching staff. After being picked to finish in the middle of the pack inside the league, the Blue Devils are in the position to make things interesting this season inside the Three Rivers Conference.
