Off the Field – Postseason looms for local teams (April 15, 2015)

The Unicoi County High School tennis teams are preparing for postseason action which is right around the corner.
Head coach Jonathan Kenney and his Blue Devils and Lady Blue Devils end this week with a match against Elizabethton, weather pending, on Thursday, April 16, at Fishery Park.
It has been a learning year for the teams, but the Lady Blue Devils are looking to make some noise, led by their top seed Emily Lynch.
A steady core of players round out the team’s top six seeds. Brittnie Rice, Victoria Bailey and Kamille Harris have brought in solid performances, along with Laurel Koening and Amanda Rogers.
For the Blue Devils, Dalton Spears continues to lead the charge.
Be sure to stay up to date with The Erwin Record for news and information from the netters of the county.
Away from the court, a big congratulations goes out to junior Blue Devil netter Carter Powers, who was named the Tennessee Student Council president this weekend.

The Lady Devil softball team made a statement this weekend at the annual Eastman Invitational in Kingsport.
Much like their first tournament win of the season in the East Tennessee Classic, the Lady Blue Devils were able to see a considerable amount of talent in the 37-team pool in Kingsport, that featured Happy Valley, Grainger, Chuckey-Doak and Greeneville, teams the Blue Nation may see down the line in postseason play.
It was also a see-saw ride for fans in attendance during the four-day event. UCHS was able to compete in 10 games.
Can they qualify for the tournament? Can they battle from their 15-seed?
Much like before, the ladies were able to respond from adversity and got the job done.
Postseason time is right around the corner at Happy Valley High School, but before that the ladies will look to capture their third tournament title of the season this weekend in the NFS tournament.

Head coach Chad Gillis and his Blue Devil baseball bunch were also able to respond from adversity last week, rallying off a tough conference defeat to Sullivan South by knocking off a Big Seven power in Daniel Boone.
The relatively inexperienced group at Baxter Field have shown they can compete with the big dogs and will look to keep it rolling this weekend by competing in the annual Coke tournament.

UCHS football is right around the corner and the season unofficially gets a start in May with spring scrimmages for head coach Glenn White and the Blue Devils.
Blue Nation has two scrimmages scheduled with the first set for May 8 at Sullivan Central. The next scrimmage is set for May 14 at Cloudland High School.
