Off the Field – One for the ages (Dec. 31, 2014 issue)

This past year has been one for the ages.
It’s not very often you get a chance to publish right before the new year, so I’ll give an early Happy New Year to the readers of The Erwin Record.
From trips to Knoxville, home wins that came down to the wire, trips to the YMCA, it would take a year of its own to remember the memories Unicoi County athletics gave to the area.

A pair of UCHS graduates have kept busy on the collegiate level during this basketball season.
The King University men’s basketball team scored a 93-76 win against Johnson C. Smith on Dec. 21.
During the contest, senior Logan Lyle, a former Blue Devil, dropped 20 points, including six three-pointers.
The Tornado will be back in action on Jan. 3 against Mount Olive and the game will be featured on the CBS Sports Network.
Across the way in women’s basketball, Mikayla Bennett and Lees-McRae had a contest against Coker College on Dec. 17.
Lees-McRae fell, 79-66. Bennett tacked on five points off the bench.
LMU will be back on the grind in the new year with a Jan. 3 game against Barton.

The Unicoi County Middle School basketball teams will return to action after the new year.
The Jr. Blue Devils and Jr. Lady Blue Devils will have contests scheduled against Greeneville Middle School on Jan. 6 and Ross Robinson on Jan. 8.
The girls will travel to the Lady Greene Devils, while the boys will play in Erwin. The second game of the week will have the girls host Ross Robinson while the Blue Devils travel.
The junior varsity teams are scheduled to open action each night at 4 p.m. The varsity games will follow the junior varsity games.
