Off the Field – Once again, teams did not disappoint (May 27, 2015 issue)

Another chapter of Unicoi County High School athletics came to a close last week following up the TSSAA Spring Fling trip by Lady Blue Devil Laura Rogers.
The 2014-15 sports year at UCHS brought its share of memorable moments. And one thing stayed the same just like previous years – the athletes did not disappoint the Blue Nation faithful.
Spring sports kept the tradition alive. The UCHS softball team ran the gauntlet of regular season tournaments, cranking home runs left and right – and center – while Blue Devil baseball team shrugged off the doubters to come within a game of punching a ticket to the state tournament.
Jonathan Kenney’s tennis teams also brought excitement. With a multitude of new faces for the Blue Devils and experience on the girls’ side, the tennis teams were just a few shots away from pulling some dramatic upsets in the District 1-AA tournament.
For the athletes running the track at Bryant Field, the future is bright under the current coaching staff at UCHS.
Viewing track and field as being “just another sport” is over. More than 20 athletes worked to peak at the right time, with different athletes coming up just mere seconds away from the state meet, including a handful of freshmen and new faces.
It was just another fun year from the eyes of this writer. I couldn’t ask for anything better than the opportunity to document the journeys of each athlete, from the start to the start.
To the seniors who graduated last week, I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. The senior athletes were a joy to work with and represented the county with pride and respect.
Bright things are ahead for the fall programs at UCHS and the middle school and The Erwin Record is ready to record the stories once again.
