Off the Field – It's football time in UC (Aug. 19, 2015 issue)

Blue Nation members stand up. It’s football time in Unicoi County.
The Unicoi County High School football team will make the trip down old Jonesborough Highway on Friday, Aug. 21, as they travel to face South Greene in non-conference action.
Excitement has been instilled in the program as head coach Glenn White prepares for his first full season at the helm of the program with winning ways on the mind.
And those winning ideas aren’t staying just in Gentry Stadium, either.
Head coach Frank Forsythe has the Lady Blue Devil volleyball team on solid footing as they opened their regular season this week. With Ashlie Padgett, Haley Peterson and Laura Rogers as the three seniors leading the team, UCHS is aiming to stay with the pack in the Three Rivers Conference.
In the fairways, Diana Tucker has the golfers ready to make noise for the upcoming postseason. Dalton Spears leads the Blue Devils. The Lady Blue Devils, despite their youthfulness, are expected to see great things down the line from the likes of Alana Peel and Grace Ann Clark.
Staying with youthfulness, the cross country program has Thad Higgins on board for his first year as head coach; Higgins is no slouch when it comes to the trails in the area.
With just one senior, the team is looking to creep up on teams this season with sophomore Megan Todd leading the Lady Blue Devils after a trip to the state meet last year.
The other high school program currently competing also brings a new flare. The Lady Blue Devil soccer program, under the direction of Bettina Chirica, is ready to establish a foundation for years to come.
Be sure to check through this week’s issue of The Erwin Record for our fall sports preview, which includes a look at each program at the high school level.
