Locals receive A.F. Bridges awards

Unicoi County sports figures were recognized on Nov. 3 by the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association (TSSAA) as winners of the 2013-2014 A.F. Bridges awards.
Denise Brown, Unicoi County director of schools, received the school system administrator of the year award for district one while Charles ‘Chuck’ Ray and Jim Crawford, former broadcasters for WEMB, received the contributor of the year award for their work with Blue Devil and Lady Devil athletics over the years.
Nominations for these awards were selected by a citizenship and sportsmanship committee in each athletic district and were made official by the state’s selection committee.
“Being recognized for one of these awards as a school or individual should be seen as one of the highest honors in high school athletics in our state,” Bernard Childress, executive director of the TSSAA, said in a press release issued by the organization. “Those who receive the awards truly reflect what high school athletics should be about, and that’s good sportsmanship and good citizenship.”
The awards were presented at Hardin Valley Academy in Knoxville.
