Lady Devils win Johnson City Honda JV tournament

“Success will never be a big step in the future, success is a small step taken just now.”
The famous quote by Jonatan Martensson rings a bell with the junior varsity of the Lady Devil basketball program, who took a step of their own by securing a win over Daniel Boone’s junior varsity team by the score of 40-37 in the championship game of the junior varsity bracket of the Johnson City Honda Classic held at Daniel Boone High School.
The win in the championship was the squad’s sixth consecutive victory.
The game for Unicoi County (9-4) was held in the main gym of Daniel Boone on Friday, Dec. 30.
“I thought we did a good job handling their pressure,” coach Keeli Parkey said. “The girls did a good job on the boards.
“Boone is one better junior varsity teams in the area and it’s good for the girls to get tournament experience against good teams.”
Tiffany Laughren led the charge for the Devils by being the spark-plug on offense with 19 points, including sealing the deal late in the fourth with two foul shots that put the Devils up by three.
Haley Webb scored eight points and Chelsey Harness scored seven in the victory.
The game that led up to the championship showdown gave the fans a rematch of an earlier season game which saw Cloudland’s junior varsity pull away with an overtime win in front of their home crowd in Roan Mountain
Different game, different result.
The Devils were able to secure a 38-34 win against the scrappy Highlander team during the semifinals held on Wednesday, Dec. 28.
“Cloudland’s junior varsity is one of the most physical teams we’ve played,” Parkey said. “Our girls handled that better than in the previous game against Cloudland, so that is a good sign that we are continuing to improve as the season goes along.”
Laughren led the Lady Devils with 17 points. Whitley True scored six, Chelsey Harness scored four and Taylor Smith scored three. Cassie Foster, Webb, Brittnie Rice and Destinie Hayes all scored two points each against Cloudland.
The junior varsity Lady Devils opened the tournament with a 40-27 win over Davey Crockett on Dec. 27.
The Lady Devils got out to a quick start, leading 12-4 at the end of the first quarter and 22-7 at halftime.
However, a weak third quarter by the team opened the door for a late rally by Crockett.
The Lady Devils weathered the second half storm and held on for the victory.
Harness led the team with 14 points against Crockett. Webb scored 12, Laughren scored eight, Hayes scored four and Emily Lynch scored two.
The junior varsity Lady Devils returned to action on Monday, Jan. 2, against Unaka at UCHS after the Erwin Record’s press deadline. The Lady Devils will be on the road against Happy Valley on Friday, Jan. 6. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m.
