Johnson County came prepared for a second chance to pull an upset on Unicoi County High Schools senior night, but the Lady Devils were not to be denied.
The Lady Devils (18-8, 7-1) wrapped up their Three Rivers Conference schedule in a big way with a 51-50 win over the Lady Longhorns to win conference title for the second straight year on Friday, Feb. 8, in Erwin.
The win locks up the top seed in the District 1-AA Tournament for the Lady Devils, along with an automatic berth to the Region 1-AA Tournament. Elizabethton, who are co-conference champions due to conference record, will hold the second seed going into Fridays district tournament held at Elizabethton High School.
Blue Nations ladies will open the Saturday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. after receiving a first round bye. The Lady Devils will face-off against the winner of the four-five seed play-in game between Happy Valley and Johnson County.
I think they had a great desire all season long to get the conference championship, head coach Kerri King said. We had a better defensive effort tonight compared to our last game and never gave up.
The Lady Devils had not been in action since last Jan. 28, and while there may have been a little rust, you cant take anything away from the Lady Longhorns effort, according to King.
All season, we would be in a week with a cluster of games then have over a week off. Thats part of the season though, she added. Johnson County just plays tough. They did a good job taking us out of our flow and making us take some mid-range jumpers we really didnt want to take.
