Lady Devils take Happy Valley to overtime

Happy Valley’s Lady Warriors went 17-20 from the charity stripe in overtime with netted 18 points from recent UVA-Wise signee Kaylee Johnson to survive an upset bid by Unicoi County High School, 70-58, on Tuesday, Jan. 19, during Three Rivers Conference play in Carter County.
The Lady Blue Devils (7-14, TRC 3-3) took over fourth place in the league and Happy Valley earned sole possession of third place with a 5-2 league mark and a 16-6 overall record.
UCHS went toe-to-toe with the Lady Warriors on the road and opened up the first quarter on a hot streak. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Kenedy King and Ashley Edwards put the squad up with a 13-10 lead at the end of the period.
Hannah Rice (20 points) topped out with a game-high performance for the Lady Devils and helped her squad extend the lead out to seven points, 19-13, with 5:15 left in the first half. HV continued to chip away and took their first lead of the contest with a bucket from Kaitlyn Roberts at the 3:12-mark to give her team the 20-19 lead.
Blue Nation was able to counter down the stretch, rattling off an 8-3 run in the final three minutes, including three points each from Ashlie Padgett and Kaylee Hendrickson, to help UCHS take a six point lead, 28-22, to the half.
Momentum started to turn the corner for the girls of Warrior Hill early in the second half. In a poor-shooting effort in the third quarter, UCHS only accounted for five points, while HV dropped 13 points to take a 35-33 lead heading into the final period of regulation.
Both teams matched buckets until UCHS knotted things up at 44-44 after Halie Padgett hit two free throws. Rice added a 3-pointer and two free throws in the last bit of regulation to give the Lady Devils the lead. However, the Lady Warriors erased a four-point deficit with under a minute left to send things to overtime tied at 51-51.
