Lady Devils survive scare against Johnson County Longhorns

The Johnson County Lady Longhorns almost pulled off the upset of the Unicoi County High School Lady Blue Devil basketball team. Almost.
Unicoi County (17-7, 6-1) highlighted their week last week by securing a two-point victory on the road against Johnson County on Monday, Jan. 28, behind a double-double from sophomore Destinie Hayes.
The win put the magic number for a regular season Three Rivers Conference championship at one game for the Lady Devils.
The Lady Devils will play that one game on Friday, Feb. 8, against the Lady Longhorns. Senior night festivities will also be held on Friday, which will be the final conference game of the season for UCHS.
Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. Junior varsity action is set for 3:30 p.m.
The Lady Devil varsity program wrapped up their week with a 68-61 win in non-conference action against the Unaka Lady Rangers on Tuesday, Jan 30.
Because Sullivan North did not play a varsity schedule in the conference, the varsity Lady Devils were credited with a win on their overall record on Friday, Feb. 1. The Lady Devil junior varsity picked up a win over the SNHS underclassmen, 48-36, on Friday.
On Monday, Jan. 28, Johnson County battled back to hold a fourth quarter lead with less than three minutes off the clock.
“They threw some defenses at us that we weren’t used to and it got us rattled,” UCHS head coach Kerri King said. “Playing in this type of environment against a team like Johnson County, I was real proud of how our girls responded late.”
Back-to-back buckets from Mary Taylor gave the Lady Longhorns a 44-41 lead with 5:27 left in the game.
