Lady Devils remain undefeated

Different types of spring cleaning have the Unicoi County High School softball team’s record nice and spotless midway through the season.
The Lady Blue Devils went 4-0 last week, including three wins on the road to keep their undefeated streak going at 13 games. UCHS nabbed a pair of non-conference victories while ending the week with a 14-2 victory over Sullivan North on Thursday, April 2, in Kingsport to keep their Three Rivers Conference mark at 6-0 on the year.
Taylor Wright, Cassie Foster and Destinie Hayes helped break the game open early to propel UCHS to an early 4-0 lead. UCHS scattered across 10 more runs during the evening and banked on a stalwart effort from Wright in the circle to pick up the decision.

Taylor Wright knocked in a sacrifice RBI that scored Haley Webb and third baseman Cierra Jackson had a run-scoring knock in the fifth inning to give the Lady Blue Devils the go-ahead runs in a 5-3 decision over Knox Bearden on Wednesday, April 1, in non-conference action.
The game was played at the neutral site of Walters State Community College. Former UCHS Lady Blue Devil Brooke Strother is currently on Walters State’s roster.

The first trip to Sullivan County for UCHS last week played out the same as the last thanks to a 17-6 win over Sullivan South on Tuesday, March 31.

Hensley went 3-3 at the plate with three RBIs and a solo home run in the Lady Blue Devils’ 6-0 shutout over Science Hill on Monday, March 30, at Lady Devil Diamond.
It was the second win for UCHS against the Lady Hilltoppers this season. The teams met during the East Tennessee Classic, where the Lady Blue Devils picked up a come-from-behind, 11-6, win.
“It was good to come in and hit the ball well today,” Hensley said. “We all pulled together as a team and played great defense behind Tiffany.”
Laughren did her job on the circle, moving the pitches around, allowing for a bevy of groundouts and pop-flies.
Webb added a pair of defensive gems from shortstop while Hensley, the other anchor of the midfield as second baseman, got UCHS rolling with a monster shot over left field in the bottom of the third inning.
The offense carried over to the fourth with Neelee Griffith, Hensley, Laughren and Keasling all knocking in run-scoring hits. Hensley added her final RBI in the sixth, plating Keasling.
“It is always a good ball game when we play Science Hill,” coach Lingerfelt said. “Coach (Jerry) Higgins is a good coach and always has them ready to play.
