Lady Devils qualify for region

A trip awaits the Lady Blue Devils for the opening round of the Region 1-AA tournament.
The Unicoi County High School (16-14) Lady Blue Devil basketball was set to face Happy Valley on Tuesday, Feb. 17, after The Erwin Record’s press deadline in the consolation round of the District 1-AA tournament.
A win over Sullivan North in the district quarterfinals last week gave the Lady Devils a spot in the region tournament, which is set to begin on Monday, Feb. 23.
Head coach Kerri King and her squad will play either Grainger County or Chuckey-Doak, the teams playing for the District 2-AA championship, depending on the results of that game, as well as the results of the ladies’ game against Happy Valley.
With a win over Happy Valley, the Lady Blue Devils will travel to the loser of the Grainger/Chuckey-Doak contest. A loss by the UCHS ladies will send them to the District 2-AA champion.
A loss to either Grainger or Chuckey-Doak next week will end the Lady Devils’ season.

The Lady Golden Raiders took the early lead on the Lady Blue Devils, but UCHS was able to extend their lead to 16-4 at the end of the first.
It was a 32-2 run in the second quarter that quelled any chance of a rally by the Raiders.
“It was a big win for us,” King said. “Everyone played with intensity.”
Halie Padgett led all scorers in the game with 15 points, 13 in the second half. She also had four rebounds and three steals.
Hannah Rice finished with 10 points. Ashley Edwards and Harness finished with nine points each.
Ashlie Padgett, Neelee Griffith, Morgan Lee Brown, Emily Lynch, Hayes and Webb all scored during the game.
