Lady Devils knock off Patriots on senior night

Lady Blue Devils Ashlie Padgett and Laura Rogers were able to go out in style for their Senior Night festivities.
The senior duo were able to secure a decisive four­set victory (25-­18, 25­-14, 21­-25 and 25­-17) over Madison County (N.C.) Thursday, Sept. 24, inside the Devils Den in Erwin.
Unicoi County High School (7-­26) went on the offensive in a big way during the second and fourth sets, accounting for 10 and 15 kills, to pull away with the victory. With the seniors being recognized, head coach Frank Forsythe saw freshman Brooklyn Jones lead the way on the court with a 12­-kill performance and was backed up by eight and six apiece from Katelynn Bennett and Kenedy King. Rogers continued her stalwart season effort as the Lady Blue Devils’ setter with a team-­high 28 assists during the night. Padgett also tallied a solid effort across the board with 13 digs and five kills.
On the defensive side of the court, Savannah Lafever added another team­-high effort by securing 31 digs. Sarah Grace Larkey, Emma Kelly and Jessica McConnell also contributed to the effort with solid performances during the triumph. In underclassmen action, the UCHS junior varsity handled their business by earning a 2­-0 win. UCHS ended the week with a home match against Sullivan East on Friday, Sept. 25, but were unable to get on the board in a three­ set defeat, giving the Lady Patriots a bye for the upcoming Three Rivers Conference tournament. The Lady Blue Devils made the trip over to conference rival Elizabethton and fell in four sets, (16­-25, 25­-14, 12-­25 and 14­-25). UCHS was able to bring the hammer down in the second set with 13 kills. Jones helped during the onslaught and finished the night with a team­ high 10 kills. Lafever and Rogers added team highs of their own with 17 digs and 15 assists, respectively.
UCHS ended the regular season with contests against Greeneville and Chuckey­Doak on Monday, Sept. 28, and Tuesday, Sept. 29, after The Erwin Record’ s press deadline. The junior varsity Lady Blue Devils will compete in the underclassman District 1-­AA tournament on Thursday, Oct. 1, at Sullivan East High School with start times tentatively set for 4 p.m. Blue Nation’s varsity netters will begin District 1­-AA tournament action on Monday, Oct. 5, at Sullivan North High School.
