Lady Devils get first win

The Unicoi County High School Lady Devil varsity volleyball team knew how to end the week on a positive note.
After a rough season opener, UCHS (1-4) recorded their first win of the season against District 2-A/AA's West Greene (26-24, 26-24) during the Cyclone Invitational hosted at Elizabethton on Saturday, Aug. 23.
Junior setter Laura Rogers’ 14 assists paced the Lady Devil attack against West Greene. Senior middle hitter Destinie Hayes had a busy evening at the office with 10 aces, four kills and two blocks. Sophomore Keelie Hall led the kill total with five, while Haley Webb kept the ball alive with five digs in the victory.
Blue Nation went 1-2 during the seeding portion of the tournament with losses to Johnson County (25-17, 23-25, 11-15) and Volunteer (25-17, 25-17).
Hayes had four kills in the action against Volunteer. Hall and Victoria Bailey had four and three kills, respectively, against the Lady Longhorns of Johnson County.
In the tournament portion of Saturday’s event, UCHS had a rematch with Volunteer and was eliminated by a 25-22 and 25-16 margin. Haley Peterson had six digs in the rematch against Volunteer, while Bailey added three blocks. Hall, Hayes and Rogers also added in the scoring.

On Aug. 19, the Lady Devils lost their season opener to class AAA powerhouse Sullivan Central (25-10, 25-19, 25-16). Rogers had 11 assists. Bailey had four kills.

The Lady Devils returned to action on Tuesday, Aug. 26, at the Devils Den with the first official Three Rivers Conference match against Elizabethton following The Erwin Record’s press deadline.
The ladies are scheduled travel to AA state champion, Sullivan South on Thursday, Aug. 28.
Next week the ladies will travel to West Greene and Johnson County on Monday and Tuesday, respectively. Freshmen games are scheduled to begin each day start at 4:30 p.m. with junior varsity and varsity games to follow.
