Lady Devils fall in thriller to Happy Valley

Lady Luck fell just short of the Blue Nation goal.
The Unicoi County High School Lady Blue Devil soccer team kept things close but fell within the final minute to Happy Valley in a 1-0 decision on Monday, Sept. 28, at Happy Valley Elementary.
“We were in it until the last minute,” Lady Devil head coach Bettina Chirica said. “We had three penalty shots and had one go in but we had too many girls in the box. This one stings a little, we had a lot of opportunities to win, but I’m still very proud of the girls’ efforts. The game could have gone either way.”
Chirica added that Clarissa Mendoza added a solid effort on the field for UCHS while Jillian Taylor was able to use her speed to get a variety of looks at the goal.
“She had two to three girls on her all the time,” Chirica said.
“She’s very quick and was able to get open. Alex (Reynoso) did a good job of coming out of the net. We also switched some things up with Ruth (Diaz) at the top and Daniela (Martinez) in the back and that worked real well. Ruth was able to set up Jillian with some passes and Daniela did a good job on defense stopping the ball.”
UCHS will be back in action this week against the University High Jr. Lady Bucs in Johnson City. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Civitan Park.
