The Unicoi County High School volleyball team defeated two non-conference opponents during action last week.
The Lady Devils open the week with convincing victories over Providence Academy in junior varsity and varsity matches. The junior varsity won in two sets (25-22, 26-24). Victoria Bailey and Hannah Keasling paced the junior Lady Devils with four kills each. Haley Webb did the damage from her spot as a server with 13 aces.
Varsity action would go the same as the younger athletes competition, with Perdues squad knocking off Providence in three straight sets (25-11, 25-22, 25-17).
Perdue credited the middle hitters following the contest, with Carrie Whitson and Destinie Hayes each having seven kills during the win.
The second varsity match of the week kept fans on the edge of their seats.
The Lady Devils squared off against Tri-Cities Christian and fell behind after losing the first two sets (25-5, 25-11).
The Lady Devil seniors, Whitson and Bethany Gibson, spearheaded their teams efforts to come from behind against Tri-Cities and win the next three sets (25-19, 25-23 and 18-16).
Whitson led UCHS with eight kills while Gibson chipped in with six of her own.
Grayson Goddard had a big afternoon for the Lady Devils with 82 digs. Kaylee Nicholson also had a big game in her own right by chipping in 52 assists in the deciding contest.
The Lady Devil junior varsity team made quick work of Tri-Cities by winning their game in two straight sets. Bailey led the team with two kills; Laura Rogers led the team with four aces.
The Lady Devils will host Three Rivers Conference opponents Sullivan North and Elizabethton this week. The Lady Golden Raiders will come to the Devils Den today (Tuesday, Sept. 25). The Lady Cyclones will be in Erwin on Thursday, which will also be senior night.
The varsity team will play in the Pick-O-Dixie Tournament on Saturday.
